Darkness is not asked for or sought, yet it lives within our hearts. Sometimes we find ourselves in it because of our choices, the paths in life we chose to take. Other times we find the darkness was handed to us, it wasn’t asked for, wanted or deserved. But here we are, living in the dark, hoping, praying, and searching for the path that will lead to the light.
Darkness is terrible place to live. There is nothing to see, or maybe there is a lot to see, but we want to forget those things we see in the dark. The tears flow freely in this place, wanted or not, there they sit in our eyes and hearts, tumbling down our cheeks. At times, they are an unwanted guest, and others an unexpected release.
Living in this darkness comes and goes. Sometimes, it lasts for an hour, sometimes a day, a month, or maybe longer for others.
Darkness is no place to live. Few want to spend their precious lives in this place, however, it is unavoidable. We only get one chance.
Walking through the darkness takes time, energy, and valuable resources. Traveling on foot, searching for light feels like a job or mission. Honestly, it’s the only way to survive – knowing, that it will eventually go away and the light will shine again. So, we keep searching, looking, knowing, hoping that we won’t live this way forever.
Hope. Hanging onto hope, with our whole beings, believing it will, in time, get better. Hope. Someday, the light will shine. Clinging to hope, with tears in our hearts, makes us continue on the path to light.
In time, the darkness fades, and images appear. A blade of grass, an adorable puppy, a hug from a true friend, the real smile on a child’s face. Those are few of the many things that make the darkness fade, and then the light shines once again.
Finding the light, out of the dark, is the most glorious sight. The sun is bright, the air is crisp, it’s an afternoon stroll on the perfect weather day. Energy flows. We laugh. We cry in happiness. We dance. The day and the world are glorious. The words flow. Life is meant to be lived in this way, always.
Living in this light, after the dark, is a different kind of life than before darkness entered. There is no going back, only forward.
The light entails life to be lived, experiences to be had, hope to never be forgotten. We know, it’s impossible to stay, in this light forever.
Eventually, the light fades again, and the darkness enters. There is no 50-50 or ideal balance. Darkness comes, leaving you to stumble through again, until the glorious day the light reappears. And it will appear again. It will. Hope must never be forgotten during the time of the darkness.
One might say, it’s impossible to fully live without the darkness. It is through the darkness we learn to understand and fully appreciate the true gift of the light.
We survive in the darkness, so we can truly live in the light.
